2024/10/20 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2024: Spanish Round / Sundday's Superpole Race & Race 2

Giving an all in until the very end

Unfortunately, Dominique Aegerter's FIM Superbike World Championship 2024 ended with a crash on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately, he came through unscathed.

Despite the early title decision in Saturday's race, the very last race day of the season still had plenty of drama to offer. At the 4.4-kilometer track of the Circuito de Jerez, in Superpole Race over 10 laps and the second main race over the long distance were fought for every position and every point as if the championship had only just begun.

Dominique Aegerter was well on his way to improving his grid position for the final race of the season in Superpole Race late in the morning. Until a few corners before the finish line, he was in ninth place, which would have put him on the third row of the grid.

In the afternoon, the 34-year-old Yamaha rider quickly found a way past some of his rivals from the fifth row until he had reached tenth position. In this position, he followed multiple champion and brand colleague Jonathan Rea. Shortly before the end of the race, however, Aegerter had to retire due to a crash. Fortunately, his injured shoulder and ribs remained unharmed.

The Superbike World Championship now goes into a long winter break and returns in mid-February with the season opener at Phillip Island in Australia, where Dominique Aegerter will start his third season with his Italian GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team.

«Superpole Race was not too bad. I was in ninth place until the last lap, which I really wanted to finish in. But then Bautista came flying up and overtook me. That is why I had to start the last race of the season in the afternoon from 13th place again. I was no longer in the best physical condition. Nevertheless, I tried to give my all on every lap. I followed Jonathan Rea in tenth position, which was good to study his riding style. But five laps before the chequered flag I crashed. I was on the limit with the front and could not save anything. So far, I am not in any more pain than before, but let's see how I feel tomorrow. At the end of the season, I would like to thank the whole team, all the sponsors, fans, doctors and physiotherapists who helped me to come back on the last two race weekends and who always stood behind me. We will come back stronger next year; I will train hard in the winter to be a better rider in 2025. Finally, I would like to congratulate Toprak on winning the title. It is unbelievable what he has achieved this season - chapeau!»
