2024/03/20 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2024: Catalunya Round - Preview

Off to European opening round in Barcelona

FIM Superbike World Championship opens its 2024 European season with the race weekend at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. A welcome opportunity for Dominique Aegerter to enjoy the second round of the series on the outskirts of Barcelona with some personal sponsors and fans.

Despite a far from optimal preparation for the season due to a viral infection, Dominique Aegerter put in remarkable performances at the first event four weeks ago in Australia. The 33-year-old Swiss rider, who is contesting his second season as a WorldSBK rider this year, finished in the points in all three races at Phillip Island and arrives to this weekend's second stop in north-west of Spain in seventh place overall. Aegerter has been staying in the Barcelona area for some time, where he has resumed his training program following his illness. A test last Thursday and Friday at the Montmeló circuit was also ideal preparation for the second round.

Eurosport will broadcast the races on free-to-air television this weekend. The live broadcast of the first main race starts on Saturday at 13:50 on Eurosport 2, with a repeat on the same channel at 23:30. A replay of the second main race on Sunday is scheduled to start at 23:30, but on Eurosport 1. It is also possible to follow all practice sessions and races via the "ServusTV On" app or online via its website. ServusTV also offers recordings on free-to-air television: Saturday from 16:45 and Sunday the Superpole race and the second main race from 16:15. Another way to watch all the weekend's sessions live is via the paid live stream on the official WorldSBK website.

The 2024 FIM Superbike World Championship comprises twelve events, with Barcelona taking place at an unusually earlier date than in previous years.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"Last week's test in Barcelona provided us with important data for the race weekend. Hopefully the weather will remain stable and nice, because at the moment some rain is forecast for Saturday and Sunday. I like the track in Barcelona, but I hope that we can improve on the test, because we were not among the fastest last Thursday and Friday. But we will work on that and try to get into the first two rows of the starting grid in qualifying. During the test we also practiced my starts, which we were able to improve a bite. That is certainly positive. However, the races will be very long, because Barcelona is also a track that puts a lot of strain on the rear tyre."

"That is why it is important to ride consistently for the 20 laps. From my point of view, it would be a top weekend if we could finish all races in the top six. But for now, I want to enjoy the race weekend, although I see potential to achieve our goal. Barcelona is also the European opener. So, there will be some sponsors and fans there with my brother. The last few days I have been training well here in the area and continuing to recover. I have been out with my off-road bikes as well as cycling with my road bike. I am ready for the World Championship round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in Montmeló and feel in much better shape than in Australia. But it will still be some time before I'm back in top form."
