2023/10/26 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Spanish Round / Preview

WSBK Season finale in Jerez de la Frontera

Dominique Aegerter heads into the final race weekend with the firm intention of finishing his amazing rookie season in the top-10 of the championship.

The world-famous Circuito de Jerez, not far from the city of Jerez de la Frontera in Andalusia, was not originally on the calendar for the 2023 FIM Superbike World Championship, but only stepped in at short notice after the cancellation of the series’ visit to Argentina. Jerez is a familiar venue for all teams and riders in the championship, as the track is often used for testing in the winter months due to the good climatic conditions there.

Dominique Aegerter has used the race-free period following the series visit to Portimao earlier this month to fully recover from after-effects to his body sustained in a crash through no fault of his own in France in mid-September. In the final races of this year's championship, the 32-year-old Swiss is looking to return to the top ten in the points table with consistent finishes in the top 10. Aegerter is eleventh overall ahead of the final race weekend.

The weekend's schedule includes two free practice sessions at 11:30am and 3pm on Friday, followed by FP3 on Saturday morning, as well as the decisive Superpole qualifying session on Saturday morning and the first main race at 2pm in the afternoon of the same day. On Sunday, Superpole Race is scheduled at the usual time of 11:00am, as well as the second main race of the weekend starting at 2:00pm. In addition to the livestream on worldsbk.com, where all sessions can be seen, Eurosport and ServusTV will also be reporting from southern Spain.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"Jerez is already the last race in my rookie season as a WorldSBK rider with the GYTR GRT Yamaha team. The season has gone by way too fast for my taste. For the season’s finale we are coming back from a longer break, but I used it well to give my body the rest it needed, because even in Portimao I still felt pain in my shoulder and elbow from the crash in Magny-Cours. The three weeks were good, even if I missed riding a superbike. With a few exceptions where I trained on a motocross bike, there was not much else I could do. On the other hand, it is good that we tested a few days in Jerez before the championship started last winter. So, there is data that will help us at the start of the weekend. Also, I think our race on Sunday in Portimao was very good. Both together should allow us to start with a good base set-up."

"As far as my goals are concerned, all I can say is that it is pretty clear that I want to fight for top-10 finishes. That also applies to the overall standings, where now there are only five points between 13th and eighth place. So, I also want to finish in the top ten in the championship. From that point of view, it is sure going to be an exciting weekend. But before that I am looking forward to seeing my team again and returning to Jerez, where I know the track well and also like it a lot. After the last race weekend, the new season starts right after that with a test on Tuesday and Wednesday, also at the Circuito de Jerez. I hope that Yamaha will bring some innovations for the 2024 season to this test. For now, though, my full concentration is on this weekend, I am highly motivated and feel very well prepared to finish my rookie season in style."
