2023/09/28 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Portuguese Round / Preview

Dominique Aegerter: «Portimao is like a roller coaster»

The 32-year-old Swiss rider and his GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team have moved over directly from Aragón to Portimao in southern Portugal for the penultimate stop of the series.

The circuit of the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve in the hilly outback of the port city of Portimao has long since made a name for itself, and not just because of its challenging layout. Because of the beautiful surroundings and other amenities, the FIM Superbike World Championship likes to pitch its tents at the Algarve coastline.

Dominique Aegerter has not yet had too many opportunities to familiarize himself with the roller coaster of Poritmao. But a test at the start of the season should be useful to get a better start to the weekend and also to finish consistently in the top 10 again.

As usual, the race weekend begins on Friday with two free practice sessions at 10:30 a.m. local time (11:30 a.m. CEST) and at 3:00 p.m. local time (CEST), followed by free practice three on Saturday morning as well as the decisive Superpole qualifying session on Saturday morning and the first main race at 2:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. CEST) on the same day in the afternoon. Sunday's schedule includes the sprint race at normal time at 11:00 local time (12:00 CEST). The second main race of the weekend will again start as usual at 14:00 local time (15:00 CEST). In addition to the livestream on worldsbk.com, where all sessions can be seen, Eurosport and ServusTV will also be reporting from Portugal.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"I look forward every time we come to Portimao. The track is very special, almost unique in fact, because of its good mix of fast and slow corners, which are mostly approached blind, the many elevation changes and the long start-finish straight, which first goes a bit uphill and then drops again in the braking zone to the first corner. A lap is like a roller coaster ride. We had a test at Portimao at the beginning of the season. So, we already have data to work with before the race weekend starts. That is certainly a plus."

"Last weekend in Aragón things did not go as well as I wanted. But that is history and now we are starting all over again. In the last few days, I have given my shoulder a bit of a rest, spending the short break in Barcelona, Lisbon and Portimao before we start the penultimate race weekend of the season. My goal for Portimao is to be consistently in the top ten and fight for the honour of the best-placed privateer and rookie, because that is where we belong. I am looking forward to Portimao and cannot wait to race there again. I want to put in a strong performance right from the start this weekend."
