2023/09/20 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Aragon Round / Preview

Ambitious goals for Aragón

Dominique Aegerter has survived the race accident suffered second last Sunday in Magny-Cours without after-effects and is now looking forward to his race debut aboard the Yamaha Superbike at MotorLand Aragón.

The Spanish circuit MotorLand Aragón in the outback of Barcelona has been an integral part of the FIM Superbike World Championship calendar for years and is also popular with all participants. Unlike the last two years, when the championship was kicked-off in Aragón, this time the event has been moved to the last third of the season.

Dominique Aegerter has known the challenging 5-kilometer circuit practically since it was inaugurated back in 2010, but despite the many laps the 32-year-old Swiss rider has completed at Aragón meanwhile, he is still lacking the finishing touches to fully like the track. A new challenge awaits him this weekend when he gets to know the track aboard the powerful Yamaha YZF R1 from the Italian GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team.

As usual, the race weekend begins on Friday with two free practice sessions at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., followed by free practice three on Saturday morning, as well as the decisive Superpole qualifying session on Saturday morning and the first main race at 2:00 p.m. on the same day in the afternoon. Sunday's schedule includes the sprint race at the normal time of 11:00 am. The second main race of the weekend will again start at 14:00 as usual. In addition to the live stream on worldsbk.com, Eurosport will broadcast both main races live on free TV. ServusTV, on the other hand, has a recording in its program on Saturday and Sunday from 15:00.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"To be honest, I have to admit that Aragón is not one of my favourite tracks. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the upcoming weekend, because it will be my debut ride with the Yamaha Superbike there. The track itself is very special and interesting, peppered with many key places like the "Corkscrew" passage and the many uphill and downhill sections. And after the chicane, there is a very long straight that ends in the incomparable finish bend. Apart from that, it would be nice if we had glorious late summer weather again, although not as hot as at Magny-Cours. From a sporting point of view, I am hoping for a good weekend with consistent finishes in the top 10 and hopefully with the one or another highlight. It has been a long time since I was best independent team rider, and I definitely want to be that again. That will definitely be a goal for this weekend."

"However, it certainly will not be a piece of cake, though, because Petrucci has improved a lot and Bassani is always there in the races. Garrett Gerloff also has been a force to be reckoned with since Magny-Cours. After the crash at Magny-Cours, I needed a few days to recover. However, I still feel my shoulder and elbow a little bit. But I was able to start training again and I feel well prepared for the upcoming task in Aragón and also for the next race in Portimao in a week’s time. Finally, I would like to congratulate the YART Yamaha team for winning the World Endurance Championship title. My congratulations go to the riders and the whole technical crew. I am happy for Nicolo Canepa, my riding coach, and Massimo Neri, my data engineer in the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team. I hope the celebration was not too boisterous and that they have since recovered well from the 24-hour race."
