The iconic track in the heart of Italy’s Emiglia-Romagna region is absolutely new territory for Dominique Aegerter, which is why he quickly acquired basic knowledge of the circuit in a race Porsche.
Teams and riders of Superbike World Championship are busy in the middle of summer, of all times. Imola, the seventh stop of the series this year, is the second of three events in July. The almost 5 kilometres long track with the sonorous name «Autodromo Internazionale Enze e Dino Ferrari di Imola» has a long tradition in the world championship with production-based race bikes. After a four-year break, the WorldSBK series returns there this weekend.
For Dominique Aegerter, however, Imola is still little-known terrain. An excursion into the car racing scene organized at short notice helped the 32-year-old Swiss to gain some track knowledge, which should make his start to the weekend easier. Apart from that, stable weather conditions should help Aegerter to return to the top ten this time after his mediocre performance last time at Donington Park.
As usual, the race weekend begins on Friday with two free practice sessions at 10:30 and 15:00, followed by the third free practice session on Saturday morning, as well as the decisive Superpole qualifying session on Saturday morning and the first main race at 14:00 on the same day in the afternoon. Sunday's schedule includes the sprint race back at the normal time of 11:00 am and the second main race of the weekend at 2:00 pm. ServusTV offers extensive live coverage, and there is also the live stream on worldsbk.com.
#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)
"After a race-free weekend, I am happy to get back on my Yamaha superbike and see my team again. Donington was unfortunately not so good for us. I think we mainly lacked practice time to better adapt to the track. But now it is off to Imola, which is completely new for me. Since it was not possible at short notice to get to know the track with a bike during a track day event, I was there three weeks ago at an event organized by Fredy Barth. The day with the Porsche was a lot of fun and, above all, I now know where to go in Imola now."
"The track is very varied and technically demanding which is often uphill and downhill and there are two tight chicanes and some blind corners. Hopefully the weather will be better this weekend than last time, it is supposed to be very hot. Then we can set the bike up properly on Friday to be optimally prepared for Saturday and Sunday and get back into the top 10. Imola is not very far from Switzerland. I therefore expect many fans from home, which will make the weekend even more enjoyable."
