2023/03/03 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Indonesian Round / Friday - Free Practice Report

Complicated opening day in Mandalika

Dominique Aegerter did not have it easy during both Friday’s free practice sessions at the start of the second race weekend on the Indonesian island of Lombok.

Race action at the Mandalika International Street Circuit is marked every time by the extreme climatic conditions of Southeast Asia. On a hot but dry Friday, WorldSBK rookie Dominique Aegerter and his crew in the Italian GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team were still struggling to find the right ingredients for faster lap times. The 32-year-old Swiss rider had to settle for twelfth place in the day's combined timesheet but is looking forward to the first decisions of the weekend on Saturday with confidence.

For the Superbike class, Saturday will begin early in the morning with free practice three as the final preparation for Superpole at 10:40 local time (03:40 CET), which will decide the starting grid for the first main race and the Superpole race on Sunday morning. The first main race of the weekend will start at 01:30pm local time (06:30 CET). ServusTV will offer a live stream in German-speaking countries. The broadcast starts at 01:25am CET with all decisions of the day will be shown.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GTR Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)
FP1: P14 - 1´36.511 / FP2: P12 - 1´33.837

"Today it was incredibly hot. Nevertheless, we started to prepare as well as possible for the second race weekend. However, the track conditions in the first practice were not yet in such a good condition. But we already know that from the past. The ideal line was maybe one meter, so there was still some grip. In the second session, however, the situation improved. In our long run we were able to set good lap times. But when we went out for our second run, we made a small change to the bike and put on new tyres."

"Unfortunately, we lost a bit of direction as a result. That is why we could not improve towards the end. We will now sit down and work hard to find a good setting and also to set up the electronics better, which is incredibly important for this Superbikes. Early Saturday morning we still have FP3, but it is already very hot then as well. After that I will give everything to get a good grid position in qualifying. Hopefully the weather will then remain as sunny and stable as today for the first race."
