2023/02/23 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Australian Round - Preview

Debut race weekend as World Superbike rider in hot Australian summer

As two-time Supersport champion, Dominique Aegerter is eagerly awaiting his race debut in the premier class of the production-based world championship this weekend at Phillip Island.

Dominique Aegerter could not have made the final breakthrough to the top of world motorcycle racing more impressively when he dominated the Supersport World Championship at will over the past two years. Promotion to the Superbike class was therefore almost a mere of formality.

Aegerter will contest his rookie season in the Italian GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team, which is closely linked to the Yamaha factory. Optimal conditions, then, for the now 32-year-old professional from the canton of Bern. Despite strong performances in pre-season testing, the down-to-earth sportsman still sees the switch to the more powerful Yamaha superbike as far from completed and therefore remains rather cautious with his expectations for the upcoming task at the iconic circuit at the small, picturesque island two hours' drive south of Melbourne.

Due to the ten-hour time difference to Australia, fans in Europe will have to wake up early.  ServusTV offers the tried-and-tested live stream of the races, which includes extensive pre-event coverages. The broadcast will begin at 05:10am CET on both Saturday and Sunday. In free TV, the two main races can be seen on "Eurosport 2". The lights went out at 06:00am CET in each case.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team, Yamaha YZF R1)

"I am excited to see what my WorldSBK rookie season with the GYTR GRT Yamaha team will bring. We had good pre-season testing where we got a lot done and collected a lot of valuable data. So, I am looking forward to the first race weekend. Besides, the prospects for this weekend could not be better as far as the weather is concerned. It is supposed to be hot and dry in the next few days as well. Apart from that, I will try to learn as much as possible and take it with me for the future. The most important thing is to understand how the overall package works at a race weekend, and of course to get to grips with tyre management. Another point is the time schedule of the weekend, because FP3 is an extra practice, and the Superpole race on Sunday morning will be a completely new experience either. Last but not least, the distance of the main races will be much longer than I have been used to."

"So, there will be a lot of new things coming my way. But I think I am well prepared for all these things. I do not want to talk too much about expectations yet though, I am aiming for finishes around P10, and I would be happy if I could achieve that goal in the three races here at Phillip Island. That would not only be good for me, but also for my team, Yamaha and all the sponsors who back this project. Even though starting times are very early in the morning for the fans in Switzerland, I hope that many will be watching and keeping their fingers crossed for my Superbike debut. ServusTV offers comprehensive coverage for the German-speaking region. From my side, all I can say is that I cannot wait for the season opener to really get going with the first races."
