2023/01/26 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Jerez-Test - Day two

A strong finish in Jerez

At the end of the two-day Jerez test, Dominique Aegerter once again caused a stir when he stormed to sixth place in his time chase.

On the second and last day of the first test in the new year, conditions had constantly changed slightly. At first, the sun was out, but frosty temperatures ensured that it was not until shortly after 11:00 in the morning that it was possible to work properly on the well-known circuit of Jerez de la Frontera in southern Spain.

After Dominique Aegerter quickly got to a decent lap time in his first runs, it took a while for him to improve due to the changing conditions on the one hand and the necessary testing work on the other. The big breakthrough came later in the afternoon, when Aegerter tried the super-soft qualifier tyres for the first time, which allow an improvement of one second. With these, the 32-year-old Swiss initially set a time of 1´31.6 minutes, which he was able to improve by another half a second on his second attempt with fresh tyres. In doing so, Aegerter ended up in sixth place on the combined timesheet for both days.

Preparations for his first season in the highly competitive and high-profile Superbike World Championship will continue on Tuesday and Wednesday next week at the demanding Portimao circuit in Portugal.

"Our first proper test ended very pleasingly. Sixth place shows that I am on a good way as far as the move to superbike is concerned. It was also an incredible experience for me to use qualifier tyres for the first time with the grip level is fantastic, even if the handling of the bike is a little different. But it is huge fun to race with these tyres. I even was out for a time attack twice today with an SCQ tyre, which I did well each time. That is what I am most happy about. But I still need more experience to get the maximum out of these tyres. Otherwise, the day was a bit bumpy, we had to deal with some ups and downs. Maybe it was also due to the conditions, which were a bit different than yesterday with more wind and slightly cooler temperatures. Nevertheless, there was a lot to try and the track's conditions were always good for collecting valuable data. In addition, it is a lot of fun to work with two bikes. So it was possible to do a lot of comparative tests and see differences immediately. Apart from that, I try to further adapt my riding style every time."

"After our rain hit test in December, I was very nervous before this one, I could not really sleep well the days before. The main thing running through my mind was where we would stand. But after these two days I can be a bit more reassured. Sixth place at the end of the test, in which the bulk of the entry list took part, is certainly nice, even though we will not race at this track. Of course, the qualifier also helped. But during a race weekend, when everyone has the same tyres and is on track at the same time, it can look different. Nevertheless, I have shown here that I can already cope well with this bike and be fast. That is certainly not insignificant. But the most important thing will be Saturday in Australia, where I should be also in this position. Only then can I be really satisfied, because in a test you never know who will go out on track with which tyres and under which conditions. Today the track conditions were very different throughout the day. Nevertheless, we came to the conclusion that we are on the right track with our package, and we will continue to work hard to close the gap to the top as quickly as possible."
