2022/12/12 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2023: Two-day Test Jerez

New adventure in World Superbike to kick-off

A new stage in Dominique Aegerter's career begins this week when the 32-year-old Swiss rider completes his first test as a World Superbike rider at the Jerez de la Frontera circuit in southern Spain.

Dominique Aegerter has been entrusted with this task by Italian GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team. With the same outfit, he will contest his debut year in the highest class of the World Championship for production-based race bikes in 2023. Over the next two days, Aegerter, so to speak, will experience his baptism of fire aboard the Yamaha R1 Superbike. He has long proven that he can handle high-displacement motorcycles well by performing at highest level in his past starts at the prestigious "Suzuka 8 hours" endurance race in Japan.

After an incredibly dominant season in Supersport World Championship, in which Aegerter successfully defended the title from the previous year, he moves up to Superbikes class as a two-time champion. Apart from that, he also took overall victory in the MotoE™ World Cup this year.

"Finally, the adventure in Superbike World Championship begins. I am really looking forward to this new challenge and also to this test with the GRT Yamaha team. It is the first time I will meet the whole team and get to know everyone. Also, I will get a taste when I get on the 1000cc Yamaha R1 for the first time. There will be a lot of new things coming up for me, such as the much more powerful bike, the electronics, and the tyres. But also, the team and the way of working will be new, where I want to settle in quickly. Hopefully the weather will play along on Tuesday and Wednesday in Jerez so that we can do as many laps as possible and gain experience. I want to get used to the team and the bike as quickly as possible so I can go into the Christmas holidays with a good feeling."

"Mainly it is about the understanding of the Superbike class, the electronics, tyres and brakes, and hopefully there will also be enough time to already know what it takes for a race weekend in World Superbike. Since the first race will already be on February 25, we want to collect as much data as possible to have a good conscience on Wednesday evening and until the next test in a bit more than a month. Until then, I will be physically preparing for my rookie season in this high-level championship. But before that, I want to thank Yamaha Europe and GRT Yamaha for the confidence they have shown in me for this task. I will give everything to justify this. It will certainly be a very exciting start to this new project. But my thanks also go to the Ten Kate team as well as to Intact GP, with whom I had a super great season in 2022 with two title wins at the end."
