2022/10/22 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Argentinean Round / Saturday' Race 1 Report

Pole position and fantastic victory on Saturday in faraway South America

Impressively performing again, Dominique Aegerter also has Argentina’s Circuit San Juan Villicum crossed off his list, where he has not been successful yet. What's more, with his 14th win of the season he has extended his lead in the overall standings to 63 points.

It was another perfect Saturday for Dominique Aegerter and his Dutch Ten Kate Racing Yamaha team, although the 32-year-old Swiss will have to do without his crew chief this weekend. William Huisjes travelled immediately back to the Netherlands due to the impending birth of his child.

In the morning Superpole (local time) it was Aegerter who was the first to race under the 1:42 mark and from then on, he pushed the lap times further down. During the 20-minutes long session that decides the starting grid, he sometimes had to give way to Italians Federico Carcicasulo and Raffeale de Rosa, but with an incredible 1:41.181 at the very last moment, Aegerter stormed to the best starting position for the seventh time in 2022.

In the first race of the weekend, it was once again Caricacusulo and De Rosa who proved out to be Aegerter's most persistent opponents. The two formed the leading duo early on and were also able to build up a small gap in the decisive stages of the race. But they probably hadn't reckoned with the strength of the Yamaha rider, who always has reserves in the final laps and thus allowed Aegerter once again to came within striking distance in the battle for today's win. First Aegerter benefited from a shifting error by Caricasulo and a little later he was at the rear of De Rosa, who had nothing left to oppose when Aegerter overtook him at the end of the long straight on the last lap.

The second race of the weekend will start on Sunday at 13:30 local time (18:30 CET). It can be followed via live stream on the internet platform of the Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com. «Eurosport 2» will start its broadcast ten minutes before the start of the race.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)
Grid position: Pole / Race 1: WINNER

"I cannot complain because I do not think this Saturday could have come to any better conclusion. First, we clinched our seventh pole position of the season, with a new track record, and in the afternoon, we celebrated our fourteenth win of the season. We thus also achieved our goal of further extending our lead in the world championship. The race itself was once again no walk in the park. We had many battles with motorcycles from different manufacturers, and it was again very similar to the last time in Portimao, because these guys ride very different lines with these machines. The characteristics of their engines require that. That is why I was always involved in big battles for positions. A few laps before the finish I temporarily lost the direct contact with De Rosa and Caricasulo a bit. But then Caricasulo made a mistake in front of me, and I was able to overtake him."

"This situation also brought me within striking distance of De Rosa, whom I was able to catch from the slipstream at the end of the long straight. A big thank you to my Ten Kate team, who once again provided me with a perfect bike. I also hope that William, my crew chief, is with his family by now, because his wife is expecting a baby, and everything is fine with them. Apart from that, I hope we will be strong enough again on Sunday to deliver another strong race in this high profile Supersport class. But before that, we have some work to do tonight to see where and how we can improve. Maybe we can find a slightly better gear ratio for this track."
