2022/10/06 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Portuguese Round / Preview

Next Stop: Portimao’s «Rollercoaster» ride

Dominique Aegerter wants to continue his flight of fancy on the spectacular race track in the south of Portugal.

The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve not far from the southern Portuguese port city of Portimao will be the venue for the FIM Supersport World Championship this weekend. The 4.5-kilometer track in the hilly outback to the Algarve coastline offers a unique layout. The course of a lap is a constant up and down with many blind corners. Portimao is the last race in Europe this year before the series heads overseas for the events in Argentina, Indonesia and Australia.

Dominique Aegerter has regained a small cushion in the points table with impressive victories in the first races after the summer break at Magny-Cours and recently in Barcelona. The 32-year-old Swiss wants to build on this in Portimao. However, he has yet to take a WorldSSP victory there.

Superpole and of course both races will be broadcast live by the Austrian channel ServusTV. But beware: there is a time difference of one hour to Portugal.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)

"Portimao is already the fourth last race weekend this year and also the last in Europe. But I am really looking forward to coming to this beautiful and unique track. The last few weeks have been very eventful for me. First, we achieved the maximum in Barcelona which was already for the fifth time this year that we started from pole position and won both races. This momentum is really incredible. Then came the signing of the contract that guarantees my step into Superbike World Championship next year. I am very happy about that. And last but not least, I celebrated my birthday last Friday. So, a lot has happened and yet I have not neglected my physical preparations."

"But now the full concentration is on Portimao, where I really like the track. I like the layout of this «Rollercoaster» incredibly well. The track is extremely fun with the many uphill and downhill sections and a good mix of fast and slow corners. And there are even a few small hills where the bike leaves the ground slightly. We finished on the podium once a year ago. But I think our package is much stronger now, so we can expect more. I am looking forward to this weekend where I can again count on strong support from home. My biggest sponsor Lanz Anliker will come with some guests, and my whole family with mom and dad will be there. That makes it even nicer for me. Hopefully some fans will also come and watch us. As always, I want to extend my lead in the championship and fight for the podium in both races."
