2022/09/23 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Catalunya Round / Friday's - FP Report

New lap record at Barcelona return

During Friday’s free practice sessions, Dominique Aegerter was in a class of his own, setting a superior fastest lap time in the afternoon. A presentation featured the first sustainably manufactured fairing for his Yamaha YZF R6, with a unique design for this weekend.

With increasingly cloudy skies but dry conditions throughout the day, Dominique Aegerter left no doubt on Friday that victory in both weekend's races will go through him. The still 31-year-old Swiss marked a clear best time in both sessions of the day. In FP2 in the afternoon, his performance was even more impressive, as he was more than a second faster than the runner-up with a record lap.

Along the way, Aegerter's Ten Kate Racing team has been working on a "green" future for motorsports for some time and has equipped its motorcycles with a world first. All the fairing parts are made of bio flax, which has almost the same properties as carbon. The big difference, however, is that it is a natural product, which means a CO2 reduction of over 90 percent during production. The current parts are the second generation, where the base material (flax) is already 100% organic, but the resin is still traditional. The third generation is in preparation and is currently being manufactured by the project's partners so that it can soon be tested in practice. The resin used here consists of 50 percent natural base product.

The first race of the weekend will start on Saturday afternoon at 15:15 CET. As usual, there will be a live stream on ServusTV.com. The starting grid will be determined in Superpole from 10:25 to 10:45 CET, which will also be live-streamed. In addition, there will be live coverage of both races this weekend on Eurosport 2.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)
FP1: P1 - 1´45.205 / FP2: P1 - 1´44.507

"I could not be happier. We started the weekend perfectly, with P1 in the morning and very impressive lap times in FP2. Our pace was very strong already in the morning, although we do not have too much data from this track, and these are from the official test at the beginning of the season last year. But that shows that our basic setup works very well. Also, I know the track from my time in 125cc and Moto2, and maybe I have done more laps in Barcelona than anyone else. But because of the weather, there are a lot of question marks. So, we tried to be well prepared for all eventualities, including Saturday and Sunday in case it is wet. When I came back to the pits after the second session and saw my one-second lead over the second-placed rider, I was a little surprised by myself. That is trully unusual for the Supersport class."

"Our package is in top shape. The team has done a great job again together with Yamaha and my physical condition is just as good. I think we can be fast at any track we come to in the next weeks. But that we are already so fast today, I would not have expected. Nevertheless, we may not rest on our laurels because our opponents will certainly improve and come close to our times. Otherwise, I hope we can continue like this and have a strong weekend. But our main goal remains to extend our lead in the overall standings. The season is still very long, there are still ten races to go and 250 points to be scored. We will take it race by race and try to fight for the podium every time. And above all, if possible, to finish ahead of Baldassarri always. But first I hope that the weather situation remains stable because in dry conditions the battles are much nicer, while in the wet the grip level is difficult to assess. But the conditions are always the same for everyone."
