2022/09/22 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Catalunya Round / Preview

Dominique Aegerter: «It is like a homecoming to Barcelona»

Currently overall leader of the Supersport World Championship, the 31-year-old Swiss rider is looking to continue his winning streak at this weekend's round eight of the season in Spain.

Before his move to the world championship with production based Supersport bikes, Dominique Aegerter often has been racing in other series at the circuit just outside the vibrant capital of Catalonia. In the early years of his career, it was the 125cc class before he moved up to Moto2 category. But Aegerter not only knows the 4.6 kilometres long Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya track inside and out, but also many off-road and motocross tracks, as well as ideal routes for cycling tours or mountain biking in the immediate vicinity. Every winter, Aegerter spends several weeks for training in northern Spain.

On Sunday before last, the ambitious racer from the canton of Bern celebrated an impressive victory in the second race at Magny-Cours, which was not only important for self-confidence but also ensured a successful start to the second half of the season after his lead in the points table had shrunk to five points in the interim. With his tenth win of the season, his lead has now grown to 19 points.

The Superpole and of course both races will be broadcast live by Austrian broadcaster ServusTV.

"I am looking forward to Barcelona and the next round of the Supersport World Championship. We come to Spain after a successful weekend in France and last weekend I did not have a race. Therefore, I took this opportunity to celebrate again a little bit the experiences of Misano with winning the MotoE World Cup title and the MotoGP test ride in the inner circle with family and friends. Of course, we also toasted the victory at Magny-Cours. I also trained hard during the break to be as well prepared as possible for the strenuous second half of the season."

"Last year I missed the WorldSSP round in Barcelona because of my MotoE commitments. But I know the track there for a long time and we also have tested here. That was at the beginning of last season. So, it definitely will not be anything new for me when the first practice starts on Friday. Barcelona is a nice track, I like it. For me it is also a kind of homecoming to Barcelona, because I am often in the area during the winter months and take advantage of the good conditions for my training. That is why we will see some Domi fans this weekend, and I also have a lot of good friends there. Apart from that, I am going into the weekend with the aim of extending my lead in the championship again and fighting for the podium in both races."
