2022/09/04 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: GP di San Marino e della Riviera di Rimini / Sunday - Race 2

Victory narrowly missed on Sunday

Dominique Aegerter wanted to crown Saturday's title win with a victory in the final race of the season but had to settle for fourth place after a mistake on the last lap.

The second race at the season finale of the MotoE™ World Cup at the Misano circuit in Italy had everything to offer in terms of excitement. As newly crowned champion, Dominique Aegerter started from pole position and also got away well. But it was Mattia Casadei again who was first going into turn one after another lightning start. Aegerter immediately clamped onto the Italian's rear wheel, but at the same time felt the breath of Eric Granado.

This trio dominated the action at the front of the field for most of the time, with the lead changing several times. At the start of the last lap, Aegerter tried to get past Casadei. However, the 31-year-old made a mistake that dropped him back to fourth place. He also saw the chequered flag in this position. It was the second time this season that Aegerter was not allowed to attend the podium ceremony. Nevertheless, he is delighted with an extremely successful result in his third MotoE season.

After winning the title in the electric bike series, the focus is now entirely on Supersport World Championship again. Next weekend, the series returns from its summer break at Magny-Cours in France.

Grid position: Pole / Race 2: P4

"In the last race I wanted to give my team another victory. I also had everything it would have taken to do that. I fought for this victory right up to the last lap. But MotoE is not an easy affair because of the short race distances. It was a tight group all the way to fifth place. I always had the feeling that a rider was breathing down my neck. That is why I also tried to attack Casadei so that nobody could overtake me on the last lap and take the win away from me. Unfortunately, I made a mistake at the beginning of the last lap and had to upright the bike briefly in the second corner to avoid contact with Casadei. This situation certainly cost me victory, and also the podium straight away. Fourth place is therefore disappointing. I would have liked to end the season differently."

"But much more important is that we won the World Cup yesterday and are champions now. We set ourselves this goal before the season. Today the pressure was off, it was completely different to ride. Also, my team did a great job again, because my bike felt really good. I was very competitive. Again, a big thank you to everyone who helped us this year. We had a perfect season. Ten podiums and two fourth places as well as three pole positions speak for themselves. On top of that, we finished every time and did not have a single crash. That gave me the opportunity to do a lot of burnouts. My mechanic always had a lot to clean up afterwards. We will celebrate all that properly tonight."
