2022/07/14 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: UK Round / Preview

Donington return after 13 years

At this weekend’s round five of 2022 FIM Supersport World Championship Dominique Aegerter meets a fleeting acquaintance in the form of the traditional English race track Donington Park.

Current points leader Dominique Aegerter has been to the 4-kilometer track in central England not far from Nottingham only once in his long career. That was in 2009, before the British Grand Prix moved to Silverstone. Apart from the renewal of the track’s surface, its layout has hardly changed in the meantime, so the 31-year-old Swiss can count on his immense experience when it comes to learning a track that is not commonplace. Apart from that, it's also a return to Leicestershire for the Supersport World Championship, as the middle category of the WorldSBK series last visited Donington in 2019.

The Superpole and, of course, both races will be broadcast live by Austrian broadcaster ServusTV as stream. Eurosport will also be on air in free TV on Saturday afternoon.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)

"A bit more than a month has passed now since our last Supersport race in Misano. I am glad that I did not completely lose my race rhythm when competing on the last weekend in June with MotoE in Assen. The last two weekends I joined track days, first at Spa-Francorchamps and then in Magny-Cours. Both times I was invited by Yamaha and once my leather outfitter IXS was also very interested in me being there. But now it is off to Donington, where I rode last time in 2009. That was in the 125cc world championship. So, it has been a while. I like the track, even if the layout is very peculiar, with a fast and flowing first part and with some "stop and go" sectors in the second half. Apart from that, the track conditions have certainly changed a bit in the last 13 years."

"Therefore, I am already looking forward to the first practice session on Friday morning, which is all about to get quickly familiarizing myself with the track and working out a good basic set-up, as well as making an initial tyre choice. In Superpole on Saturday, I want to finish in the top six so that I can start the races from the second row at least. That should put me in a position to fight for the podium on both Saturday and Sunday and try to further extend our overall lead. Before this weekend, we have a 54-point lead. That is a nice cushion, but the season is still long and therefore we have to go full throttle in every session. I am looking forward to the reunion with my Ten Kate team and hope that many British fans will come to watch. Maybe there will be a few Swiss fans as well. The weather forecast for this weekend is very untypical for England, as it is supposed to be sunny and hot. But I much prefer that to cold and wet conditions."
