2022/05/27 - FIM MotoE™ World Cup 2022: Gran Premio d'Italia / Friday - FP and QP Report

Unbeatable on a hot Mugello Friday

Dominique Aegerter set the bar very high for the competition at the start of the third meeting of the season in the e-bike series - after setting fastest lap times in free practice sessions, the Swiss rider performed in masterclass to secure pole position in style.

The 2022 edition of the Gran Premio d'Italia got underway in glorious weather at the beautiful Mugello circuit. In the weekend’s timetable as a supporting program, MotoE™ World Cup is also competing its round three in Italy’s Tuscany region.

Dominique Aegerter, who took the lead in the overall standings with his first win of the season at Le Mans the Sunday before last, underlined his intentions from the outset with posting fastest laps time in free practice one in the early morning and ironed out the only shortcoming of his so far flawless start to the season. In his impressive record, Aegerter was still missing the top spot on the starting grid in a MotoE race. With a perfect lap in Q2 in the afternoon at asphalt temperatures of just under 55 degrees, he outlined his first rival by 0.268 seconds at the Autodromo Mugello in the heart of Tuscany.

The first race of the weekend will be livestreamed by SRF on Saturday afternoon. The broadcast will begin ten minutes before the start.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Dynavolt Intact GP, Energica)
Grid position: Pole - 1´59.205 (4/5)

"I am really happy about my first MotoE pole this year. Two weeks ago, I just missed it, but today my lap was perfect. It is also an incredibly nice feeling to be back at Mugello after three years as I have really missed this amazing track. But back to the essentials. We started the weekend very strongly by setting fastest lap times in FP1 and FP2 respectively and my crew did a fantastic job again. A small adjustment compared to Le Mans had a positive effect again, as we improved with each session and ended up on pole. Apart from that, our pace is just as strong. However, the conditions out there are anything but pleasant due to the heat."

"But it will be a help to launch the races from the best starting position. On the other hand, we have to be careful because on the long straight we can expect some slipstream duels and that you quickly can lose out. In addition, this track is a much bigger challenge with the MotoE bike because of these many fast changes of direction along a lap requires an enormous physical effort. But it is also a lot of fun to race here with the Energica bike. Mugello has always been a home race for me. That is why I am hoping for the cheering and support from the Swiss fans as well as the Italian spectators. I will give everything to fight for victory in both races."
