2022/04/23 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Dutch Round / Saturday's Race Report

Brilliant pole position and race win on Saturday in Assen

Dominique Aegerter and his Ten Kate Yamaha Racing Team are well on their way to repeating last year's triumphant weekend at its team home race.

Reigning Supersport champion Dominique Aegerter sets new standards at almost every occassion. On Saturday morning, the 31-year-old rider from the canton of Bern pushed to pole position in Superpole. In the process, he became the first Supersport rider to stay under 1'37" at the fast and flowing TT circuit in the northern parts of the Netherlands.

In the first race of the weekend, Aegerter followed surprisingly strong local hero Glenn van Straalen for a long time. When the race was stopped on lap 13 of 18 due to an incident that also involved Aegerter’s compatriot Marcel Brenner, the Yamaha rider had the right instinct as he squeezed past Van Straalen moments before the red flag signals came out and in doing so he celebrated his second win of the season.

The second race of the weekend will start on Sunday at 12:30 CET. A live stream is shown on the website of Austrian right holder ServusTV.com.

Grid position: Pole-Position / Race 1: Winner

"Today, the decision was very close because I was not sure until the very end whether I would win or not. When the red flag was shown, five laps before the end of the race, I just get past Van Straalen just before the start/finish line. It was probably something worse as the race control had to act that way. I hope the two riders who crashed are okay. Everyone's health is the most important thing. We were well prepared for the race as our pace was good in every session. This morning we had an incredibly strong Superpole. Our new all-time record with a 1'36.9 during my pole lap was an additional boost. It shows very clearly that my Ten Kate team has done another fantastic job and I am hugely happy for them to have taken this win at their home race."

"It is an incredibly nice feeling to stand on the top step of the podium here in Assen. The enthusiasm of the team's guests with all the sponsors and partners who visiting us is overwhelming, as well as the Dutch fans are an enthusiastic crowd. So far, we had nice weather this weekend, although the strong and cold wind is annoying. Nevertheless, there were already many spectators at the track and in the paddock yesterday and also today. I am pleased about that because the atmosphere in the paddock is picking up again. But the wind is also an obstacle out on track, and you have to get used to it."

"In contrast to yesterday and also this morning, when it was sometimes more and sometimes less windy, the wind conditions were more even in the race. But the conditions are the same for everyone. You just have to adapt to the situation. Nevertheless, I am hoping for less wind on Sunday. So far, our weekend has been fantastic. But the most important thing is to get the 25 points in the race what we have managed today. But the season is still very long. So, we have to stay focused and take it lap by lap and race by race. But we have put together a very strong package. Therefore, I hope to be able to play this out in the second race tomorrow as well."
