2022/04/10 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Aragon Round / Sunday's Race Report

Aragón weekend with brilliant victory concluded

Dominique Aegerter made good on his announcement to reverse the order in the second race on Sunday when he crossed the finish line with a razor-thin lead over Saturday's winner Lorenzo Baldassarri.

The second race day of the weekend was accompanied by beautiful spring weather. It was the best conditions of the long week since the two-day test on Monday and Tuesday. Dominique Aegerter was already after warm-up in the morning to beam with the sun. Setting fastest lap time with a clear gap was a perfect start. In the race, the 31-year-old Yamaha rider again got off to the best start and with aggressive early laps he immediately made clear his intentions to be at the top of the podium in the end. After the strong performance, the current Supersport champion leaves the season opener as world championship leader.

Grid position: 2nd / Race 2: Winner

"I am really happy about my first win this year and also about my first here in Aragón because I do not count this track as one of my favourites. Therefore, the satisfaction is doubly great. In yesterday's race we were very lucky in the last corner that Baldassarri and I survived this situation in one piece. Today I interpreted my race differently. I pushed very hard from the start and tried to build up a comfortable lead. But Baldassarri was always close behind me. So, I tried to stay focused and not make any mistakes. Once he passed me. I wanted to use this opportunity to study him, where he was faster and where I could overtake him again. But his pace was not that strong. Therefore, I overtook him right back. However, once again I did not manage to pull away a bit. So, it was clear that he will try it again in the last lap on the long straight. It came then also in such a way and in this moment, I thought to myself, "no, the same does not succeed you again"."

"Then in the last corner I had the better line and was able to make the pass on the inside. It was a well-deserved finish to the weekend. As a result, we also took the lead in the championship. A big thanks to the whole Ten Kate team. They did a fantastic job over the winter months when they showed up with a strong package to start of the season. For sure there is still room for improvement. That also applies to me, as I have to change my riding a bit here and there. On this track it affects the section around turn 14 when it goes onto the long back straight. But now there are track coming up that should suit us better. In two weeks, we have the team's home race in Assen. We tested there just recently. It was the best occasion to collect a lot of data. That should now also be a small advantage for us when we start the weekend. Before that, it is on to Jerez for me, where a MotoE test is scheduled for the next three days. Last but not least, I would like to say hello to my sponsors and suppliers and also a big thank you to them for everything they do for me."
