2022/04/09 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Aragon Round / Saturday Race Report

A stunning second place at the start into the new season

On Saturday afternoon in sunny Aragón, reigning Supersport champion Dominique Aegerter came close to start 2022 with a spectacular race win.

The second day at the season opener of the FIM Supersport World Championship at the Spanish MotorLand Aragón circuit has begun under somewhat cloudy skies. For Supersport teams and riders, it was straight to going into Superpole. In this 20-minute session, the starting grid was determined. In good track conditions with asphalt temperatures of just under 20 degrees, Dominique Aegerter speeded to second place on the grid.

Until the start of the first race at 15:15 local time, the sun came out more and more and it became much warmer. Starting from P2 on the front row, Aegerter got off very well. Duringthe first sections of the 5 kilometres long track, the Yamaha rider led the competition before Can Öncü took over the top spot. About halfway through the distance, Supersport newcomer Lorenzo Baldassarri got it serious for the first time when he took over the lead from young racer from Turkey.

Aegerter did a tactical race the whole time. A few laps before the chequered flag, the 31-year-old from the canton of Berne wanted it to know by launching a breakaway attempt, which was unsuccessful. From this point on, Aegerter and Baldassarri engaged in a fierce battle for today's victory. On the last lap, Aegerter made a mistake in the last section of the track whilst racing in the lead, and the Italian immediately took advantage of this to take the lead of the field. In the last corner Baldassarri, however, had to use all his skills when he almost lost control of his rear wheel. Unfortunately, Aegerter could not benefit from this, but he had to make a wide arc because of it.

For the second race of the weekend on Sunday at 12:30 CET, the cards will be reshuffled, so Aegerter and his crew reckon they have a good chance of turning the order around. The race can be followed via live stream on the internet platform of the Austrian rights holder ServusTV.com.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6)
Grid position: 2nd / Race 1: P2

"I have to be satisfied with this second place because it was the maximum today, although with a bit of luck even victory would have been possible. The last lap had quite a bit of drama to offer. In any case, we scored 20 important points at the start of the new championship in what was not an easy race, though, because I quickly realized that I had no chance of overtaking Baldassarri on the back straight. Therefore, most of the time I tried to keep my rhythm constant, see what was happening in front of me and come up with another plan. I passed Balda a few times, but it was impossible to stay in front of him. He always passed me back immediately, while every time coming out of the last corner, I lacked the momentum to catch him again before the finish line."

"With five laps to go, I pushed and wanted to pull away. I pushed like crazy, but I was never able to get more than a maximum of two or three tenths of a second ahead. My current package is certainly better than last year but still, it was not enough to outdo Balda and his Yamaha today. It may be that this track is very special. There are some difficult corners to accelerate out of in first gear and the tailwind on the long straight also takes a bit of getting used to. In any case, I have to adapt my riding better to said sections. I also think that the Evan Bros Yamaha is a valuable help in these places. Tomorrow, however, we already have the next chance to turn the result around."
