2022/04/07 - FIM Supersport World Championship 2022: Aragon Round / Preview

Highly anticipated season opener

Dominique Aegerter is eagerly anticipating this year’s opening round at the Spanish MotorLand Aragón circuit. 2022 heralds a new era in the FIM Supersport World Championship.

As defending champion, 31-year-old Swiss Dominique Aegerter starts his second season in the intermediate category of the world championship with production-based race bikes. Little to nothing has changed in his environment withing the Dutch Ten Kate Racing Team, Aegerter will try to win the world championship again with the same crew and proven technology in the form of the Yamaha YZF R6.

However, changes to the technical regulations ensure a completely different starting position to that of a year ago, as from this season the use of motorcycles with more than 600 cc, but with a concept other than a four-cylinder engine, is permitted. For the first time, brand new Supersport machines such as the Ducati Panigale V2 (2-cylinder 955 cc), MV Agusta F3 800 RR (3-cylinder 800 cc) and Triumph Street Triple RS (3-cylinder 765 cc) will be seen on the starting grid. By means of a "Balance of Performance" rule, these motorcycles, newly homologated for this category, are classified at the performance level of the Yamaha YZF R6.

The Supersport World Championship race calendar currently includes twelve events. Phillip Island in southern Australia was recently confirmed as the series finale on November 20th.

#77 Dominique AEGERTER (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha, Yamaha YZF R6):

"The championship finally getting underway so, I am already eager to see the actual balance of power and it will be very exciting once again when we go out on track with the new manufacturers under race conditions for the first time. The two-day test at the beginning of this week already gave us a somewhat of ataste of the balance rule. But now there is no way of return, everyone has to put their cards on the table. Our Ten Kate technicians have worked hard over the winter to make our Yamaha competitive with the new Supersport bikes. However, our pre-season preparations on track were not quite optimal. We had more rainy days and cold conditions than we would have liked."

"But I think we made the best use of every situation and the few dry track conditions, as we were very fast every time we went out. That is certainly very positive and gives us confidence. There are still a few finishing touches to do and innovations to try on the bike, but our base set-up is definitely at a very good level already. We were fast with it on different tracks. We have put together a strong package, and we are now ready to start the new season. After last year's plenty of successes, we have set ourselves ambitious goals. It certainly will not be easy, but we are determined to successfully defend the title. We want to fight for top results every weekend. Aragón should be a successful start to the new championship."
