2024/08/11 - FIM Superbike World Championship 2024: Portuguese Round / Sunday's Tissot Superpole Race & Race 2

A hot Portimao weekend ends with two top 10 results

Dominique Aegerter scored more important points for the championship with an eighth and a tenth place on Sunday afternoon in the south of Portugal.

The 2024 edition of the Superbike World Championship’s round at the rollercoaster track in Portimao will live long in the riders' memories. Despite cloudy skies until midday, temperatures on Sunday were not much different to the previous days. By the time the action started on track, the sun was shining more and more and not only heated up the atmosphere among the many spectators.

Dominique Aegerter proved to be a good starter in Superpole Race. Starting from tenth on the grid, he made up four positions on the first lap. After ten hard-fought laps, he saw the chequered flag in eighth place. The 33-year-old Swiss rider was also involved in lap-long battles for position in the second main race of the weekend in the early evening. In the end, he scored points for the third time in Portimao with a solid tenth place.

The next round of the series will be held on the weekend of September 6-8 at the Magny-Cours circuit in France.

Grid position 10 / Superpole Race: P8 / Grid position 8 / Race 2: P10

«We finally made it into the points again in a Superpole Race again. I had a very good start and then it was a great battle with my opponents. Eighth place also paid off in a better starting position for the second long race, where I lost positions on the first lap because the first lap is always a tough battle. I did not feel too bad with the bike, but when another rider on a different bike is in front of me, it is difficult for me to overtake. That takes about the first ten laps, during which I cannot implement my riding style. That is why I am not so happy with the outcome of today, because I think if I did the first few laps better, I could have kept up with Jonathan Rea, who was fighting for fifth to seventh place in his group. Portimao was a very unusual weekend, not only due to the heat but especially because of the schedule. Thanks to the team, who always did a great job despite the difficult conditions. We will continue to work on getting closer to the top six. That is our goal. Next on the agenda is Magny-Cours, where the track suits us well.»
